GOALS of Innovations in Mobile Data Collection:

With the ubiquity of mobile technology, both real-time data collection from the ground and monitoring of key indicators in difficult operating environments are now possible. Mobile technology in the hands of people can now be more than a person-to-person communication medium -- it can be used to capture, classify and transmit image, audio, location and other data, interactively or autonomously.

As field data can now be collected with greater speed and accuracy, previously unexplored possibilities for programming and advocacy have emerged.

This workshop will explore the critical issues, technologies, and architectures involved in collecting and utilizing data-from-below, bringing together key technology and research leaders on distributed data collection and utilization in the Middle East.

Specifically, we will:

  • Explore key issues in real time, accurate data collection in the Middle East. These include technologies, systems, architecture, tools, standards, and people, and the interplay between them
  • Kick-start a regional working group / community around open-source data collection, aggregation and visualization using mobile technology. These will potential partners and vendors for UNICEF, as well as interested academic institutions, groups and individuals.
  • Map the landscape in the Middle East of applications/technologies, developers, and key thought leaders around real-time distributed data collection, monitoring, and visualization using mobile technology.
  • Prototype new products or improvements of existing products relating to distributed data collection.

Innovations in Mobile Data Collection for Social Action is a highly participatory event.  You can expect the following:

MARKETPLACE/SCIENCE FAIR -

  • Some participants have been asked to participate in an informal "Tech Fair" on the first day.  Please bring your laptop to demo your tool, project, or platform to a small group of people. The goal is to go beyond just an overview of your tool, project, or platform but let participants dig a little deeper, with your guidance. Think of it as a hands-on exhibit with a small group of participants who will be wandering from 'exhibitor' to 'exhibitor'.  If you have materials you want to hand out, please feel free to bring them.
  • If you have mobiles/apps you'd like to showcase, please bring them. The same goes with any written collateral, brochures, case studies, etc or you can post them in the Reading section of this wiki.

PEER ASSISTS -

  • Peer Assists are an opportunity to discuss problems/challenges and get peer advice/assistance on potential solutions, in a small group setting.
  • In advance of the workshop, brainstorm some of the specific challenges in your work that you want to discuss with a small group of your peers.
  • We have planned some peer assists in advance but if you have a specific issue you would like to discuss, please get in touch with us and we make it happen!

IGNITE TALKS

  • Some participants have been selected to give short 5-minute presentations, or "IGNITE TALKS," during the course of the workshop. Please scroll down below for a list of presenters.
  • Ignite Talks auto-forward every 15 seconds for a total duration of the talk of no more than 5 minutes.  If you are doing an IGNITE TALK, we ask for your presentation in advance in order to compile a master set of slides for the event. Please email slides for Ignite Talks to Katrin at mobileactive dot org by Dec. 4th.
  • Information on giving a great Ignite Talks is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGENcskRGRk&feature=player_embedded

INTERACTIVE SMALL GROUP SESSIONS -

  • There will also be small group sessions with plenty of ideas and interactions with a passionate and knowledgeable community of you all. If you want to discuss a topic, you will have the chance to do so, so please be prepared. If you are interested in leading a discussion or workshop, here is what we ask:  Have a short introduction of the topic you are interested in ready, as well as two or three key questions you awnt to explore in the conversation. You do not have to be an expert at all in the topic you are curioous about -- sessions can be exploratory with your questions and ideas rather than a polished presentation!
